Experience the beautiful Nærøyfjord on a trip to Flåm
Combine the UNESCO attraction with local beer tasting.
If you're staying with us at Kviknes hotel in Balestrand, it's worth taking a trip to Flåm. You can experience contrasting mountains and fjords, taste local beer and take an unforgettable train ride on the Flåm Railway.
Take a boat or car
In the summer, you can take a boat from Balestrand to Flåm. The boat leaves every day at 08:30 and returns at 15:30 (buy tickets on board). With the boat you can really enjoy the high mountains and the majestic fjord up close. With the smell of the sea and wind in your hair, it's a sensory experience.
You can also take the car to Flåm, over Vikafjellet or through the Lærdal tunnel. Both routes offer beautiful scenery and take around 2.5 hours.
The Nærøyfjord - narrow and spectacular
Whatever your means of transport, you must experience the Nærøyfjord. It is not without reason that UNESCO has chosen to include it on its World Heritage List. With wild waterfalls and steep mountainsides up to 1800 meters high, the Nærøyfjord will take most people's breath away. This branch of the Sognefjord is around 17 kilometers long. If you come by car, it can be experienced by boat from Flåm.
Panoramic view with Flåm cable car
You can also experience the famous Flåm Railway. This is one of the world's most spectacular train journeys and one of the biggest attractions in Norway. The train runs from the end of the Aurlandsfjord up to the high mountain at Myrdal station. You rise from sea level in Flåm to 870 meters above sea level at Myrdal station. This is a train ride with panoramic views of some of the wildest and most magnificent scenery in the Norwegian fjord landscape.

Local beer from Ægir Brewery
Before you travel back to Balestrand, you should visit Ægir Bryggeri. Not only have they received several awards for their good beer, they have a pub on the quayside that has been voted "Brewery Pub of the Year" three years in a row. You can also book a beer tasting in Gildehallen - a magnificent Viking-style building with a dragon's head and a nine-meter-high fireplace.
If you want more activity, you can explore Flåmsdalen on foot or head into the beautiful Aurlandsdalen valley for a longer hike.
